1. Remedial Chaos Theory—“Enough with the timeline crap, Abed! Pierce got shot in the leg and died. Shirley’s a drunk. Annie’s locked in a mental ward because her guilt drove her insane. Jeff lost an arm in the fire. Troy lost his larynx because, for some dumb reason, he tried to destroy a flaming troll doll by eating it.–Britta This is the season’s best episode not only because it is beyond clever and laugh out loud funny, but because it sets up through lines that will last the entire season. It is here that we first sow seeds of Annie moving in with Abed and Troy, Britta and Troy’s flirtation and begin the march toward the finale’s resolution of “the darkest timeline”. It all starts when Troy & Abed invite the group over for a housewarming at their new apartment. While playing Yahtzee, the pizza arrives and Jeff decides to roll a die to see who will have to go down and get dinner. Abed insists Jeff is creating six different timelines, which everyone else shrugs off. But for the remainder of the episode, we see how events would have played out when each different character left the apartment. In each case, we still see Jeff hit his head on the ceiling fan and have to endure Pierce’s tale of an airplane hookup with Eartha Kitt. But depending on who leaves, the dynamics shift just enough to change events; sometimes for better, sometimes worse. The “darkest timeline” seems to be when Troy goes for pizza. In it, Britta and Shirley fight, Annie and Jeff make out and Pierce gets shot with Annie’s gun from inside her purse. When a stoned Britta panics at this sight, she drops her joint and starts a fire that results in Jeff losing an arm and Troy his larynx (long story). Oh, and Pierce dies. It seems the best result was when Abed stopped the die from landing, and Jeff was forced to go get the pizza. And amazingly, this premise played out over the entire season, with Evil Abed popping up several times (and even briefly replacing our Abed in the season finale), and the possible implication that StarBurns’ lawyer was Evil Jeff.
