I’ll say right now that I am not the ideal audience for stories about teenagers, because I don’t understand those people. Even when I was a teenager, I avoided them at all costs. That said, I really enjoyed MAXIMUM HIGH.
There’s big crazy action, and as a guy who’s into that kind of thing, I was completely delighted. The standout for me was a faceoff in “the cube”, which is, and I quote “a twelve-sided fighting arena. Each side has its own gravitational field. At the center – zero gravity.” It’s Thunderdome with inconsistent gravitational pull! The mystery of just what the heck is going on at Maximum High is developed well, too. It’s basically a given that the lead characters don’t have the whole story, but the way it plays out is clever and surprising.
