There's a new kids CD hitting the streets, and though it may not reach the rarefied air of The Wiggles, it certainly deserves to supplant the likes of the Kidz Bop CDs that flood the market, consisting of little kids singing bubblegum pop and R&B chart toppers that range from irrelevant to downright inappropriate for their age group.

It's called Lydia Grace by the Sursiks and it is a refreshing change of pace.  The album features an array of musical styles, everything from jazz and rock to pop, reggae and acoustic lullabies.  All of these styles are wrapped around the voice of a three-year-old singer, the titular Lydia Grace, who sings about all kinds of things, from her "Aunt K8" and monsters to tape and toast.  David Minnick is responsible for all of the music, which he arranged around the lyrics, created organically by Lydia. She was not told what to sing, but rather captured as she sang about a picture she was coloring or a favorite toy. As a result, some songs have infectious hooks, like "A Goonight Day and A Rainy Day" and "Somebody Went to School", while others are more nonsensical, like "Tape, Tape, Tape" and "Ocelot".

Either way, her sweet, high-pitched voice is infectious and made my little ones giggle, while the music made them dance.  This, of course, is the litmus test of any kids' music.  When parents can actually enjoy the music that accompanies the simple words, it can make the time spent more fun for everyone.  Lydia Grace takes a unique approach to a rather saturated genre and deserves to get noticed.

The Sursiks' music is available for download on CD from CDbaby and in digital format at emusic.com
