All of this led up to BNL, who welcomed the crowd with their usual enthusiasm and humor. Now the sole frontman, Ed Robertson has really grown into the role and keeps things moving, but anyone who’s seen the band as a five piece can still feel the void left by the departure of Steven Page. Ed & Steve’s chemistry was always what made the Ladies’ live shows so special, and the group’s identity has yet to move past that. It doesn’t help that Page’s voice was always the more distinctive one, thoughts Robertson sings just as many of the band’s biggest hits. Kevin Hearn and drummer Tyler Stewart do admirable jobs in covering Page’s parts on “If I Had $1,000,000” and “Alcohol” respectively, but those shoes are hard ones to truly fill.
