Welcome to April! A new month means a new list of things I’m excited about. Once again I dived into the worlds of TV, movies, comics, podcasts, and video games to find the releases I’m most excited about this month. And, yeah, Game of Thrones and Endgame are on the list. How could they not be?
Brockmire (April 3) – The surprisingly delightful comedy with Hank Azaria as an alcoholic sportscaster returns for a new season. This time, Brockmire is sober and calling games for the Oakland A’s, which seems like a couple of things that he can ruin in short order. This season adds Tawny Newsome (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, every podcast) and Richard Kind to the cast and those are two people who consistently make things better. This has been a favorite since the beginning and I’m looking forward to the new season. (IFC)
The Tick (April 5) – Woo! One of my favorite shows returns and this time, The Tick and Arthur are hanging out with John Hodgman! In the new season, Hodgman plays an A.E.G.I.S. scientist, and if anybody was born to play a Ben Edlund character, it’s America’s favorite deranged millionaire. I’ve stayed clear of spoilees about the new season, but it looks like The Tick and Arthur are working with their version of SHIELD and they have a friend with a magic nipple. I wrote a lot about the first season, including my theory that it was the final version of the specific story Edlund has been trying to tell since the Tick’s comic days. And that means we’re headed into all new territory, including possibly some more revelations about what The Tick even is. I’m so excited! (Amazon)
Killing Eve (April 7) – Last year’s buzz show returns and picks up right where last season left off. I’m not even sure how much there is to say. I mean, the show is popular enough that it’s going to air on two cable stations simultaneously this year. Just hook this up to my veins as the spring of Phoebe Waller-Bridge kicks off. (She’s the showrunner, but you new that.) (BBC America / AMC)
War of the Realms: Journey into Mystery (April 10) – I’m going to be honest with you. I’m not following Marvel’s War of the Realms crossover. It’s some kind of Thor stuff. I don’t know. But I am psyched for this tie-in miniseries because it’s written by the McElroys! Dad Clint and brothers Justin, Travis, and Griffin, podcast royalty all, are writing this series that features the Miles Morales Spider-Man, the Kate Bishop Hawkeye, and several other characters including maybe my least favorite Marvel character, Wonder Man. It should be lots of fun, and if anybody can make Wonder Man entertaining, it’s the family who brought us The Adventure Zone. (Marvel)
Threedom (April 11) – It’s the return of the podcast where Scott Aukerman, Paul F. Tompkins, and Lauren Lapkus just hang out and tell stories and play poorly-conceived games. It’s a lot of fun, provided you like the hosts, and who doesn’t like the hosts? They’re delightful and this show is always worth a listen. I believe it’s going to be released behind the Stitcher Premium paywall, and then later released for free on the Earwolf feed, but they aren’t great about making those specifics clear. Regardless, it’ll be funny and there will probably be plenty of spankings to go around. (Stitcher Premium)
Game of Thrones (April 14) – You’ve probably heard at least a bit about the upcoming final season . I mean, it’s come up. We’re getting six episodes of White Walkers, betrayal, dragons, and Tyrion being right whether anybody listens or not. One episode features the longest battle sequence ever filmed and we’re already speculating who survives and who ends up on the Iron Throne. And yes, it’s entirely possible it’ll be somebody who hasn’t been mentioned since Season Two. This show throws you those curveballs sometimes. (HBO)
Cuphead (April 18) – This game came out on the Xbox One last year and was notable for both its beautiful vintage animation look and its punishing difficulty. It looked amazing, but I don’t have an Xbox One. Luckily, it’s coming out for the Switch. The graphics appear to have survived the transition intact, and the short stages preceding a boss fight structure should be a great structure for the occasionally portable console. I’m really excited to finally play this game about a man with a cup for a head.
Gotham Series Finale (April 25) – I’m going to talk a lot more about this in the coming weeks, so here I’ll just say that even though I love this show and I’m going to miss it, I’m also really looking forward to the finale. One week earlier, we get the end of the “No Man’s Land” arc, and we saw a little bit of that in a flash forward. Also, I’m very worried about Alfred after Bane broker him. The finale is supposed to be set ten years later and we are reportedly going to see Batman and the Joker. They’ve already released some shots of Cameron Monaghan’s final form as Joker, and he’s incredibly creepy. He even has the green hair (what there is of it), which DC wouldn’t allow previously. They wanted to save the Joker for movies so Monaghan has played an almost-Joker for years now, but the guy in the previews is identified as the Joker so maybe DC is letting them send the show out in style. I’m going to miss Gordon and Bullock and Barbara and the best version of Penguin ever. This will take some time to process. (FOX)
Avengers: Endgame (April 26) – This is another thing that, you know, you’ve heard about. It’s the follow-up to Infinity War, this time with more Captain Marvel and Ant-Man. They’re keeping details pretty tight, even if it’s a safe bet that the heroes who turned to dust are coming back. Spider-Man and Black Panther have sequels lined up and that Guardians threequel is probably not going to be just Rocket and Nebula. But still… who’s the woman learning archery from Clint? Are they really all wearing quantum suits in the trailer? Did Luis survive the Snap and will he meet the Avengers. Because, please, picture Michael Pena trying to pet Rocket and you’ll be happy all day. That aside, with some of the original Avengers reaching the end of their long-term contracts, we might be saying goodbye to some favorites. I’ll be a wreck.
Man, this is going to be quite a month. Let me know what you’re excited about in the comments!
