A couple of years ago, I started to wonder if there could ever be another music phenomenon. I wondered if, in our diverse, splintered, genre specific world, could there ever be another artist like a Garth Brooks, Britney Spears, or Madonna who seemed to be everywhere and simultaneously on everyone’s radar. It doesn’t matter if you love or hate the phenomenon, it just matters that you notice. Lady Gaga is coming very close to that. She’s been a part of our consciousness for about two years now, but if anyone can keep herself mega-famous, it might be Gaga. And while Gaga herself said last night that, at 16, she would’ve been stopped at the Idol front door for being too wierd, she knows full well the power of Idol and she understands what’s going on. Idol was a music phenomenon unto itself, and it needs to get back to that place and crown a musical phenomenon at the same time. Idol is betting all its chips on Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.
