The Voice Season Two–Blind Auditions Round 3
We’re still moving through blind auditions, kids, and tonight’s group was a bit underwhelming, no? There were a few standouts, but a lot of middle of the road folks who may or may not have made it to group night on Idol. Even so, the show was made by coaches’ banter, as they all tended to be delightful in their own ways. Yes, even Christina. And Cee-Lo’s cat. Anyway, let’s break it down by team, looking at the rejects briefly first.
The Rejects:
Winter Rae–Well, I highly doubt that’s her real name. She works full time at Lucky Strike Lanes in L.A. where her heavily tattooed bod and half shaved blue hair are embraced completely. She gets extra points for her stunning face, but has them deducted for being friends with Perez Hilton and inviting him to her audition. Her rendition of “Take A Bow” was a little shaky and there was not a ton of range. Adam was encouraging in his rejection, as per usual.
David Grace–The burly football coach and former player often gets mistaken for security or UFC Fighter. His “Sweet Home Alabama” was just OK. Blake wanted Adam to turn with him, but Adam passed. Blake wavered until the end, and ended up passing. He wasn’t sure if David was sliding up to find a note, or doing it on purpose.
Elley Duhe–This young girl sang ”Release Me”. She had a stylized voice that no one connected with. She drew out the last note, and still no one turned. Blake thought her falsettos were pitchy. Adam said he might have turned if there had been a few more seconds. She had a good enough attitude to get a hug from Christina.
Team Adam:
Pip (no last name)–His skinny frame and dimpled cheeks, complimented by a bow tie and Chuck Taylors, certainly don’t match the song choice of “House of the Rising Sun”. His voice was very strong and clear. Adam turned early (his sister freaked, as would I), and then everyone made their plea. He went with Adam because he was first. So, a little bit of coach strategy paid off.
Chris Cauley–This normal seeming guy sang “Grenade” in a different kind of arragement tha piqued the interst of both Cee Lo and Adam. It was great all the way through; very smooth. A nice, drama free audition.
Nathan Parrett–He sang “The Joker”, but we didn’t get the whole audition, or any sort of backstory.
Katrina Parker–got her invitation hand delivered by Carson Daly at her office. She was working in an empty office, so I can’t imagine she didn’t know something was up. She apparently sick for two years due to hidden mold in her home. Her version of ”One of Us” had a deep, raspy, cool quality to it. However, Adam was the only one who turned. He thought her voice was just different, and he loved it.
Team Cee Lo:
Sarah Golden–The evening began with this woman’s take on Lady Gaga’s ”You and I “, and the audience got the reveal of her face only a few seconds before the coaches. She’s basically a butch looking girl, not The Elephant Man as the voiceover would suggest. Despite Blake calling her real and refreshing and Cee Lo alluding to the idea that he would like her to be an experiment, she chose Cee Lo.
Erin Martin–The self described “Egyptian warrior princess”, pulled out “Hey There Delilah” as kind of Bjork meets Corrine Bailey Rae and it somehow won over Blake and Cee Lo. From the second he called her a “wonderful creature of a woman”, Cee Lo had this one. But it was hit home by his “Quite naturally you belong to me, don’t you agree?” I keep expecting to see Cee Lo’s mini me show up at any time. At least his white cat was back to say hi!
James Massone–He’s 23 but looks about 16. He works for his dad at a body shop in Boston, so naturally the producers shoot b-roll of his dad telling him to “pahk that cah in the yahd”. He sang R&B jam “Find Your Love” and Blake, Christina and Cee Lo all turned. His falsetto didn’t hook Adam in. He was overcome, and cried as he finished. Adam’s shout of “he’s white!” was one of the funniest moments of the episode. Of course he ran backstage to his family and shouted “How you like them apples?” to complete the whole Good Will Hunting portrait. He’s truly adorable, though.
Team Christina:
Geoff McBride–A married man with three gorgeous kids who wears sunglasses inside due to a boxing injury. He slayed “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder. Christina turned early, while Cee Lo jumped in late to compete with her. Christina pulled out the “I have soul too” card that she used last time and it worked!
Moses Stone chose “Let’s Get It Started” and became the show’s first ever MC. Christina liked his energy and clear delivery, but again we got no backstory and only a piece of the audition.
Team Blake:
Jordis Unga–Her parents are Tongan and Swedish, making for a very pretty combination. Her rendition of “Maybe I’m Amazed” is raspy, soulful and bluesy. Blake went early, Christina and Cee Lo went late. Blake won her by spouting this nugget, “Your voice makes me want to push myself to be better.” (Adam, “Oh, that’s good…”) Christina attemped to make her case by talking about how she’s not off touring. She left out the implied “because last time I tried, I didn’t sell any tickets and they had to cancel the tour.”
Erin Willett–She had a touching sob story about her dad having pancreatic cancer. Her version of “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 was a little by the numbers, but the power of her voice reminded me of Anastacia or Taylor Dayne, even though I don’t know that she’s as good as either of those ladies.
Brian Fuente–This rocker guy sang a song called “Paris” and clearly earned his spot on Team Blake, though, once again, we didn’t get any back story or even the whole audition.
So, any favorites from this group? Anyone you thought shouldn’t have made a team? Me, I could just watch Adam annoy Christina and egg on Blake for hours on end, so this episode was fine for me. See you next week!
