This is the last week before the fall schedule begins. I mean, there are only a few premieres next week, but one of them is Gotham and that’s the one that matters. So things are a little light this week, but we get season premieres of Better Things and Vice Principals, plus the Emmy Awards. So that’s pretty sweet.
Here’s what to watch on TV this week!
8-10 American Ninja Warrior – It’s Night 2 of the Finals! They’re a little cagey as to whether this is more of the first round or if it’s going to incorporate Round 2. This show is tricky, what with the way it’s the one reality show that usually ends with nobody winning.
9-10:15 Preacher – SEASON FINALE! Jesse questions his mission, Tulip uncovers a dangerous secret, and Cassidy struggles with the truth. I’m guessing next season will bring in Jesse’s grandma and, if we’re lucky, TC and Jody. We’ve seen their arms in flashbacks all season!
10:30-11 People of Earth – The group attends a convention and Agent Foster receives unexpected news. Huh. No mention of Ozzie. This show is stressing me out more than it should.
Tonight at 8:00 on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC is a benefit for hurricane relief. I’m impressed that they think they can knock that out in an hour. Also, for an added bummer, a week ago this was for Hurricane Harvey relief and now they had to expand it to include Irma.
The Mindy Project – The final season of the highest profile series to follow me on Twitter begins tonight! I feel like I brag about that way too often.
8-9 Big Brother – With the end of the season approaching, we get another eviction tonight. It probably won’t be Paul, but it really should be.
8-10 MasterChef – First, the top six create a dish inspired by their families and then it’s time for the semi-finals and a series of skill tests. Man, what dish would my family inspire? What tastes the most like a cheating father? Nutella?
9-10 Big Brother – Another live eviction as we head toward the final three. Let’s be honest, who had Kevin and the woman with the broken foot making it this far? Nobody, right?
9-10:30 Project Runway – A curiously timed episode has a challenge based on Descendants 2, a TV movie that aired this summer. Regardless, the designers have to create a look that represents good or evil. If I were on this show, I’d totally make a green cocktail dress covered in question marks for that “Sexy Riddler” look.
10-10:30 Better Things – SEASON PREMIERE! Oh, this show is so good. And Pamela Adlon is taking a cue from her collaborator, Louis C.K., and directing every episode this season. And since it’s FX, the listing just says “Sam has people over”.
8-9 Big Brother – Special Friday episode! Since they’ve already done the episode where they reminisce, this one might actually have some gameplay value. Might.
American Vandal – This parody of the true crime documentary genre tells the story of a high school student accused of drawing penises on 27 faculty cars. That’s a funny idea but I have no idea how they turn that into eight episodes.
9-10 Halt and Catch Fire – Donna struggles with suspicion, Bosworth hits a breaking point, and Cameron faces past mistakes. Man, doesn’t sound like we’re getting a lot of happy stuff this week. Unless the part they left out is “Joe and Gordon have the time of their lives at Cedar Point”.
8-11 The Emmy Awards – Stephen Colbert hosts this ceremony honoring the best in TV. Well, the best as determined by people who don’t watch as much TV as they should. That said, I’m going to cheering on The Night Of because it’s been more than a year and I still think about that show all the time.
9-10 Fear the Walking Dead – The Ranch seeks help from another community to replenish their water supply. OK, here’s what would turn this show around for me – make it a show about building society again. I want to see people try to rebuild rather than get another tired “man is the real monster” polemic. In 2017, the zombie genre is inherently kind of alt-right and the main Walking Dead really leans into that and I’d like to see something more interesting than that.
10-11 Talking Dead – Guests discuss the new episode. This week’s panel: Three chumps who clearly were not invited to the Emmys.
9-10 The Deuce – The premiere hasn’t aired as I write this, so I don’t have anything to say. I’m still excited about David Simon making a new show, though!
10:30-11 Vice Principals – SEASON PREMIERE! Gamby returns to work after being shot by an unknown assailant. I loved the first season and I can’t wait to see where this is going. Also excited for the return of Walton Goggins to go back to basically playing the Joker.
11:30-12 am Rick and Morty – No information available!
12:15-12:30 am Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories – No information available, but it’s titled “Angel Man” and before the new episode airs, they’re repeating 2014’s “Angel Boy”, so my guess is it’s a follow-up to that story. Neat!
