The big TV news this week is the premiere of Matt Groening’s Disenchantment on Netflix. I have a feeling that I’m going to end up watching the whole thing the first night, BoJack style. Besides that, a bunch of my favorite shows are in season so even if it’s not a long schedule, it’s packed with quality.
Here’s what to watch on TV this week!
8-10 American Ninja Warrior – It’s the Philadelphia Finals! A massive wrench fight determines the winner, who then has to eat horse poop. Look, I don’t like to stereotype a city, but that one Eagles fan really did eat horse poop to celebrate a Super Bowl win. So it’s not fair, but it’s accurate.
9-10:05 Better Call Saul – Kim tries to support Jimmy as he searches for new employment, Gus navigates fallout, and hopefully Mike continues to take his fake job way too seriously.
10:05-11:10 Lodge 49 – Just between you and me, I fell asleep during the pilot, but that’s not a reflection on the show itself and just on how old and tired I am. I’ll watch it before the new episode, I promise.
10-11 Making It – This week, Amy and Nick have the crafters make “snack stadiums” and I’ve never heard that terminology before but I’m picturing a bunch of hot dogs going to see a football game.
10:00-10:30 Wrecked – The charismatic millionaire who rescues the survivor may not be what he seems. We’ve already seen him kill a man with a crossbow, so they probably don’t need to qualify that with “may not”.
8-9 Big Brother – Veto competition! Also, let me just take the time here to thank Spunkybuddy Nancy who, out of nowhere, got me a video shoutout from Big Brother Hall of Famer Janelle! (Seasons 6, 7, and 14 if I recall correctly.) It was rad and totally made my day.
8-9 MasterChef – The contestants have to properly break down a halibut and then cook a dish using said halibut. So if you screw up the first part, you’re just going to working with like a face or something.
9-10 Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back – I’m starting to think Gordon doesn’t have the legal authority to shut down restaurants. The premise of this show is that he’s surprising these restaurants, so it would seem that they haven’t signed waivers like they would have on Kitchen Nightmares, and it probably isn’t OK to secretly install surveillance cameras in a business you don’t own. Just saying, I think Gordon is overstepping his authority here.
10-10:30 Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits and Monsters – A soldier is called for a very special mission. Maybe the Army is going to turn him into a vampire and this is all just long game to install Bobcat as the director of a Creature Commandoes movie.
9-10 Big Brother – Live eviction! And given the mood of the house, at least one flat-out screaming match. Or just one person screaming while everybody else looks on in horror (most people) or disinterest (Brett).
10:30-11 Detroiters – SEASON FINALE! The future of the firm is in jeopardy when Sam discovers he might be a father. This show is a delight, man. There’s nothing on TV quite like it.
9-10 The Great British Baking Show – SEASON FINALE! I can’t get over the fact that the first challenge requires them to make a pithivier. I have never seen or heard that word before and my family owned a bakery for like a generation and a half. I guarantee my Grandpa never made a pithivier.
Disenchantment – Matt Groening created this animated fantasy comedy, so you know I’m already on board. Crazy how, in almost thirty years, this is Matt Groening’s third show. The man takes his time but his work brings me so much joy.
8-9 Big Brother – Nominations! Hopefully something else because just nominations makes for a pretty thin episode. As a recapper and a viewer, I wish they’d bring back the food competitions. It fills up some time and these people deserve nothing but, like, beets and Skittles for a week.
9-10 Sharp Objects – Camille crosses a line in her investigation and new details about Marian’s death come to light. Next year, Amy Adams is winning every Emmy, including the ones for which she is not eligible.
9-10:08 Fear the Walking Dead – Alicia seeks refuge from a storm and faces an agonizing past. Man, I love writing listings for a Walking Dead show that don’t mention the Saviors.
10:08-11:08 Preacher – Tulip, Jesse, and Cassidy are divided and forced to battle old friends and new enemies. That is the blandest listing ever for this show.
12-12:30 am The Venture Bros. – “Arrears in Science” – it’s the conclusion to what they’re calling “The Morphic Trilogy” and given the crazy events in Part One, Part Three is going to be wild. I want to be more specific, but I have friends who won’t be able to watch this season until it’s on DVD or Hulu and I don’t want to spoil them. So don’t tell Sam what’s inside the PROBLEM console!
