11.  Lights Out (FX) – This one-season wonder told the story of retired boxer Patrick “Lights” Leary.  Running out of money, he had one last chance to get back in the ring and provide for his family.  But Lights basically made every wrong decision possible – he ran one errand for a mobster, an act that had significant repercussions.  He trusted the wrong people consistently, and he let his family slip away.  It was one of the bleakest things to air on TV all year, but masterfully acted and emotionally engrossing.  It ended with what was, for my money, the most heartbreaking moment on TV all year.  It’s a real shame that there’s not a second season coming, but what we got was a complete story with a real ending.  Really excellent work.
