15. The League (FX) – I should not love this show as much as I do. It is a show about friends who are horrible to one another, and it’s heavy on the sexual insults. And yet, it works for me. There is nothing redeeming in The League, but I laugh so hard whenever it’s on. The fact is, the character work is rock-solid and even though the jokes can be crude, they’re actually jokes. To put it in sports terms, which is appropriate, The League has good fundamentals. It’s actually a little bit like a bro version of Seinfeld with its intersecting plots, its running gags, and its strong sense of absurdity (If Seinfeld were on now, you just know Kramer would have come up with offline social networking. Taco has picked up the baton that he dropped.) I’m especially fond of Paul Scheer’s metrosexual Andre and Nick Kroll as the mean-spirited Ruxin – those characters consistently crack me up. The TV snob in me does not want to like this, but I can’t help myself.
